Davao del Norte to focus on consumer education

TAGUM CITY (27 September) — The provincial government of Davao del Norte will be observing Consumer Welfare Month in October, placing high concerns on the need to educate consumers.

Conforming with the celebration theme, “Enforcing Consumer Rights towards and Progressive Philippines,” the provincial office of the Department of Trade and Industry has lined up month-long activities for the occasion.

The activities were adopted by the Provincial Consumer Welfare and Price Coordinating Council in a meeting Tuesday which was presided over by Board Member Macario A. Bermudez II of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Trade and Industry.

Among the activities set for Consumer Month include hanging of streamers by major business establishments in Tagum City on October 2; motorcade, October 3; consumer welfare desk capability seminar, October 19; capability building of consumer organizations, October 25; launching of the consumer billboard project bearing the theme “A Well-informed and Vigilant Consumer is the Best Protected Consumer, October 27; and the culmination activity and awarding ceremonies of the Best Palengke ng Bayan.

Nelly Esperanza, DTI Davao del Norte chief of the Consumer Welfare and Trade Regulatory Division explained that looking after the consumer welfare would also mean advocating for vigilance among consumers.

DTI is also encouraging consumers to take part in legislation process of policies that ensures protection of their rights, she said.

Meanwhile, representatives to the Provincial Consumer Welfare and Price Coordinating Council meeting saw the need to focus on the need to look into weighing scales in public markets.

There were also concerns raised regarding the rampant selling of food supplements in the local market.

Representatives to the council also wanted to make consumers down to the grassroot level aware of their rights to reinforce implementation of Price Act and other pertinent laws on consumer welfare and protection. (PIA XI/JMDA)

City mulls putting urinals on high-ways

IF PLANS push through, Davao City might just become the second metropolis to have urinals lining the city streets.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte raised the idea of putting up urinals along the highways just like in Metro Manila where pink urinals are erected along sidewalks.

Duterte said the urinals will however be placed only in the outskirts of the city and not in the downtown area.

“Because in downtown, they (public) could go to hotel or restaurant to urinate,” Duterte said.

He said the urinals will be placed five kilometers apart and are intended for travelers who suddenly feel the call of nature.

Banana company to resume operations

The Philippine Fresh Fruits Development decided to resume operations in Paquibato District after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte assured that it would be protected. In a press statement, the company said they would operate again since “they trust and deeply respect the words of the mayor.” Upon learning that two packaging plants of the company were burned allegedly by members of the New People’s Army, Duterte said he would arrange a dialogue with the rebel group. He said he would urge them to stop the harassment of businessmen in the area because they could not give the revolutionary taxes which they demand. The company said they made a makeshift packaging plant to cope with the affected operation. The management said they were not able to obtain a fresh loan to start the reconstruction of the plants. “The initial 20 percent of the operation will be implemented as seven hectares of harvestable bananas greatly affected the boxes quota of bananas,” the statement added.

IT park to rise in Davao City

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / September 19) – The City Council here endorsed today (Tuesday) an information and technology park planned to be built at the end of this year, setting the stage of what industry leaders hoped would be a more vibrant investment here.
The City Council passed a resolution that endorsed the application of Damosa Land Incorporated with the Philippine Export Zone Authority (PEZA) to develop "Damosa Information Technology Park" in a 23-hectare area in Lanang, about six kilometers northeast of downtown Davao.

A PEZA accreditation would require a city council endorsement where prospective investors would be granted with tax holidays and other incentives.

The park would have two information technology buildings, a data building, and a commercial and a utility building that would have an unlimited power supply.

The first phase of the construction of the technology park would accommodate companies like call and medical transcription centers, the Damosa Land Incorporated said in a statement. This phase would cost P20 million.

The IT building, based on DLI's presentation, would be equipped with high-speed fiber-optic telecommunication backbone and high-speed international gateway facility or wide-area network.

DLI said that the company would need P150-million to construct the second phase of the park.

The part is expected to benefit the local information technology sector but also it will "spur economic growth in the city," DLI's Ed Villaber told the City Council in a committee hearing last month. This would be the second IT park in Mindanao. Pueblo de Oro was the first IT park established in Cagayan de Oro City.

Councilor Peter Laviña was quoted in the committee report as saying that many call centers had backed off from investing in the city because of the absence of a PEZA-approved area where they could avail of incentives.

The development of the park, according to the report of the council's committee on trade, commerce and industry; will stimulate peripheral business and generate more employment in the city.

The project is expected to initially hire 400 employees.

Landowners advised: Understand squatters

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte yesterday warned la landowners in the city to respect the rights of people encroaching in their properties by allowing the city government to transfer these people to resettlement sites instead of ordering the demolition of their homes. Speaking before his weekly television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” over ABS-CBN, Duterte even warned that he will ask the court to expropriate properties of landed individuals who will “wantonly” dismantle houses of squatters without orders either of the court or the city government. "Don't order the demolition of people occupying your properties since the city is not ready with the relocation of these homeless residents," Duterte said.

Duterte explained he is compelled to issue the warning after he took notice of some landowners who ordered demolition of squatters’ houses without providing relocation sites for those affected by their orders.

The mayor said at the moment the city government cannot yet open the relocation site to the homeless residents because it is still preparing the facilities and livelihood centers in the area so that when they are transferred there is a minimal impact especially on their livelihood activities. "Landowners need to understand that relocation cannot be done overnight since you just cannot transfer people without ensuring they can have the livelihood in the area," he said.

wew...what a tiring little morning...it's 5:11am over my clock...and im still wide-awake browsing the net...and making some revisions of...a friendster background that is not mine...duh?? NOT MINE...it's for my preggy sister...she keeps on bragging me for a alteration of her friendster account!! Note that she have doesn't have only one account... my backs' aching...im hungry...tired...oh i don't know what to feel at this moment...it's all mixed up!!
After "hours" of crafting an image....i came with a floral-japanese aura styled with butterflies and my sis's image. :)) I really don't appreciate my work...i could have done better...hihihi but im slightly proud of it...as a result, here it is...i decided to make it as my temporary desktop backgroud...
